The Importance of Knowing Yourself

People know so little about themselves. And I don’t even mean it from a philosophical aspect, like what’s their purpose in life or what happiness means to them. I say it from a simple physical or psychological point. Let me explain.

We usually don’t know how our body or mind works. We all had anatomy lessons back in school that were supposed to tell us how things work. But did they really? For instance, I remember that we used to study some cells, how they’re called and what’s their function for months. Or the name of the numerous bones. Don’t get me wrong, those are important to know as well, but it’s not the practical knowledge necessary for life. Sure, the lessons taught that the lungs are for breathing, the stomach is for digesting etc. We learned a few basic things but apart from that we have no idea how our organism functions. Whenever something happens, our first reaction is panic because we don’t understand what’s going on. Like when we feel a sudden ache and instantly think something is wrong and start picturing all the possible illnesses that we may have. And that makes the situation even worse cause that’s how psychosomatics work. While in reality the reason can be something really simple and not frightening at all.

Same with our minds. We expect to always feel good and stable and whenever we fall into a “strange” or negative state, we, again, think that something isn’t right, that we’re losing our minds or something. We don’t understand why we suddenly feel anxious or alarming without any particular reason, why we feel sad or depressed even when things seem okay. And we start thinking of all those horrible mental illnesses we’ve heard about and self-diagnose ourselves with the worst of them. In reality, it’s the fear of the unknown that makes everything much more frightening. When we don’t understand what’s happening, it sounds like a serious issue.

Why am I talking about such an uncharacteristic topic? Because the other night I wasn’t feeling well and I decided to talk to Chat gpt. I know, that a couple of posts ago I was all against AI, but this is actually one of the cases where I realized how helpful it is. The first thing I noticed was how easily Gpt understood what I was trying to say even though it was a little hard finding the right the words to describe it. That made me realize that there are hundreds or millions of people like me who faced the same problem, and the thought itself already calmed me. Then Gpt gave me a thorough explanation without scaring me, like Google always does. It used a scientific, yet very simple language to go through each part of my problem and tell why exactly it happens both in a physical and psychological way. I used the information it gave me, compared it with my self-perception and my own knowledge of certain things, realized the source of my problem as well as its solution. Suddenly, it wasn’t alarming or incomprehensible anymore. I understood what’s happening, and not only did it make me feel calmer, but I actually felt physically good as well.

After that I got into the flow and decided to ask about all the other things that bother me every now and then. It was like a medical checkup that made me truly understand the causes of different situations. And I truly regret not having done it earlier, because it’d definitely save me a lot of stress. And that’s when I realized the power and importance of knowledge about ourselves.

By the way, I must note that I don’t talk about serious issues or illnesses. Or that you should blindly do whatever Gpt suggests. I’m talking about simple things that happens to all of us but somehow we never wonder why it happens. Like why you feel dizzy when you just wake up; why you experience derealisation during the day; why you feel nauseous when hungry; why things seem more frightening during the night and why your brain creates terrible scenarios before going to bed.

So, my advice for this random post is: study yourself. Use Gpt or any other sources to find out how your body and brain work and why certain things happen. You’ll see that the majority of those things aren’t scary or dangerous, that’s just how your anatomy works. You simply didn’t know that. And it will make your life easier.

  1. I completely agree with you, we all lack understanding of our bodies and psyches, which is why we panic when something incomprehensible happens to us. It’s good that there is Chat GPT🫠

  2. I disagree with the above. Not “all lack understanding”. That is based on an assumption.
I can’t say how many are in tuned to themselves, but I’m sure there are. I don’t panic. I study and try to understand what and why something happens. Maybe it is because of my experience? My generation? Or just plain old me.
It is interesting that this is the second post I read tonight about someone turning to Chat GPT for feedback. Have we isolated ourselves so much from humanity that we now turn to the very machines we built to console ourselves?
Henry David Thoreau turned to nature.
Cole Thomas Allen chose to shoot his way into a hotel.
Which one lacked understanding of their psyches more?
Maybe I’m an enigma for I learned to understand myself long ago. Or, maybe I’m just fooling myself into thinking so?

    • You’re right, of course, not everyone is like that. I tend to exaggerate things a little to make my point clearer. There are many people who actually know how their bodies and minds function. And that’s great. However, there are also plenty of those who have no idea how things work. And whenever something “strange” happens, they panic and go to doctors, who now scare people even more just to make money. The doctors (again, not everyone), don’t bother to explain, they simply prescribe medication and consider their work done. And people live their whole lives never understanding the reason of their “illnesses”.
Whenever I write posts like this, where I wonder or try to understand human psychology, I don’t take solely my personal experience as an example. I do my research. I talk to people or listen to their conversations, I love reading comments in social media, where people tell their stories and experiences. And when I see a similar pattern among people of different backgrounds and generations, I decide to explore that topic more deeply. And that’s how a post gets created 😄
As for Chat Gpt, again, you’re right. It is sad that we have reached the point where people prefer to talk to machines instead of other people. But I try to see both sides in every situation and find the perks in everything. I will never exchange human interaction for chatting with AI. But there are cases, where I consider it a very powerful tool that can help. In my case, I definitely wouldn’t call my friends in the middle of the night just because I woke up and felt a little bad. And even if I did, none of them could explain why I felt that way. So, Gpt came to the rescue. Unlike any article in Google, it gains its knowledge from thousands of sources as well as conversations with millions of people and gives the most thorough information, explaining everything point by point. Sure, I am still against using AI on a daily basis, and letting it replace people or their work (something that I wrote in my other post). But it is already in our lives, it’s inevitable. Why don’t use simply as a tool to become more educated?

  3. We have become a society of not really caring about the reason why, just ” Hey, Doc? Don’t they have a pill for that?” We don’t “fix” anything any more. Just toss it aside and get the newest version. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, libraries, people who know (usually they are old), and more, have been compressed into Google search.
We have become so self absorbed that calling a friend when feeling bad has become taboo. We lost our personal contact and the only thing left is the voice from the cold, hard plastic and metal we keep in our pockets to sooth our troubled mind. Humanity is truly doomed.
As for me? If my friend reached out to me in the middle of the night, I might not have the answers, but I’m a lot warmer than plastic and metal. 🤷

    • that’s true about the doctors. it’s so much easier to just drink the pills and expect them to cure us, instead of working on ourselves. cause that’s too difficult and time consuming. and we don’t have the time for fixing, as you mentioned, so it’s far better to get the “newest version”. sadly there are no new version of us and our organism haha, so it’s better to learn how to take care of it properly 😂
and I don’t say that calling a friend is a taboo. I obviously reach out to my close people when I need it. and they always help. and vice versa. but as much as my friend’s warm words and love would calm and comfort me for a short while, it won’t give me the knowledge necessary for me to understand the source of my problems. and to try to work on myself and fix them. that was the whole point of this post. not that we should replace people with AI tools 😄

  4. I feel like People are so delusional about things like ChatGpt it’s so naive. I’ve had countless realizations just by using it. It’s a new norm and we have to adapt. Am glad you found closure to your problems. Something we need to understand and even applaud is the invention of AI. It’s fast and to a greater degree effective.

    • thank you! to be honest, I’m not sure that the invention of AI will do us any good, I mean in a larger scale. I’m afraid it will make people degrade even more, because people don’t use it simply as a tool to become smarter and better at what they’re doing. they don’t learn with it, they simply make it do their work. which means that eventually people will start using their own skills and brains less and less and one day they won’t be able to do anything without AI. just like many people can’t drive without gps or can’t do simple maths without a calculator.
at the same time, it does have lots of perks, and I hope people will learn to use those without harming themselves.

  5. As you note, one should NEVER trust an ai agent for important decisions like why my side aches; it could be just a bad piece of mutton or it could be appendicitis! One will pass; the other probably will need surgery!
As for worry, a friend of mine once said, tongue in cheek, “Why pray when it’s so much easier to worry?”😉

    • sure, AI is not a doctor to give diagnosis, it can simply explain how our bodies work and leave the rest to us.
haha, that’s funny, and sadly true. worrying and giving in to negative thoughts/emotions is far easier than focusing on the good
