AI has taken over the world, leading us to a more digitalized future. While many people are happy with the technologies developing so fast, I can’t really share their enthusiasm.
When we used to picture the future, we’d think of robots that’d do the routine work we do on a daily basis, like cleaning, cooking, or running errands. It would give us a lot of free time and energy to be more productive, to be able to embrace our creativity and come up with cool ideas and projects. But somehow things went wrong along the way. We still do all those tiresome chores while the robots are successfully implementing all the artistic and intellectual tasks. They’re writing articles and even books, making music, art, photos and videos. And I honestly can’t understand how we came to think it’s okay to let AI replace human minds and talents. Because that’s what’s happening right now.
It all started from using AI merely during work to make things easier. And I may be okay with it, especially when it comes to doing research, finding the necessary information and data. Now the same task can be done much faster and more effectively, cause AI will look into every possible source, while we probably won’t be able to do that. At least not that fast. But the problem is that somehow we really enjoyed how our work is being done by someone else. How we don’t have to rack our brains anymore, don’t have to think on our own. We simply give orders, blindly copy the results without even going through the effort of analyzing or proofreading it, and present the work as our own. And many people are okay with it.
Things got worse, when we started usung AI for our leisure activities and creative self-realization as well. If you think about it, most of our social media accounts and blogs are just a hobby, something we do for fun, or to fulfill our potential. Sure, some people monetize it, but that’s not the point now. The point is that all these platforms were created as some kind of online galleries, where people share their art, talk about things that inspire and are important to them. So, please explain to me, why on earth would people use AI to express their own thoughts in their blogs? I mean if you don’t have the writing skills, guess what: don’t write. If you are not a photographer, don’t make a photography page. Or, if you’re really drawn to it, just start learning how to write, paint, take photos. It’s literally that simple.
What’s the point of opening, let’s say, an Instagram page dedicated to philosophical wanderings, if you can’t do the wanderings yourself? I mean it’s just a hobby, it’s not like your life depends on it. If you can’t do it – simply don’t. That’s the point of a hobby: you do something you enjoy and have a certain amount of skills of. Imagine paying an artist to make illustrations, then bringing them home and pretending you painted them. For me, it’s equally ridiculous. The most ironic part is that 90% of AI texts aren’t subtle. On the contrary they’re so obvious and easily detectable.
They are short. Sharp. Straight to the point. Each phrase separated by a period. And it’s not about just using AI. It’s about letting AI help you.
If you couldn’t guess, this was a satirical imitation of a very common AI pattern that many people use. And imagine seeing similar texts pretty much everywhere. Most people don’t even bother slightly changing these, or adding at least a little personality to them. I kinda lose my trust and even respect for all those creators whose content is AI generated.
The worst part is that these technologies are getting better. If a few months ago I could easily tell a real and AI content apart, now it’s becoming much harder to do so. And I’m honestly so sick of it. Sick of having to guess whether this cute cat is real or not. Sick of believing in something and then realizing it’s fake. If you think about it, it’s so ethically wrong. But somehow people still don’t understand that. They don’t realize in the fallout of this situation. Now it’s all fun and games, but wait until one day you go to a doctor, and he gives you a wrong diagnosis. Because he used AI when he was studying at university and he doesn’t know a thing about medicine. In a few years our world will be full of professionals who are as far from their specialties, as a fish from flying. Who have to check every single thing with Chat gpt, because they don’t have the knowledge or the skills to think on their own. That’s how our future will look.
You know, I’m not against developing technologies. They do make our lives easier and better. Like if there was no internet, I personally wouldn’t be able to write this right now. Or to watch movies, download songs and books, learn to do pretty much anything by simply watching a tutorial. But I firmly believe that everything should have a limit. I am not against AI as it is. Guess what: I use such tools as well. But that’s how I treat them – merely as tools, that, for instance, check my grammar and punctuation, sometimes offer better synonyms or a stronger phrasing. And if I’m being too honest, I mostly use them to write corporate letters, because I suck at them. Or to check some symptoms and get a medical advice haha. But I have never ever used it for my blog or Instagram, because that’s where I see the line. I can use some help in work, in something I’m not that good at yet, but I will never use it for my creative realization. And I wish people used AI the same way.
I don’t think this post has a moral. But this topic has been bothering me for many months, and, as you probably know, I love complaining here about things I don’t like or accept. I understand that it’s impossible to fight the system, to stop the progress even if you consider it bad. I just hope more people will understand how wrong it is to merely rely on AI and let it evolve, instead of evolving ourselves. Because, believe me, one day we’ll face the consequences of today’s decisions. And they won’t be pleasant.

I agree with you 100%, if people don’t come to their senses, they will face the same fate as horses, donkeys, bulls, etc., which, after the advent of machines, were left idle and over time they are almost no longer needed on farms.

that’s sadly true! I hope we won’t get there

I agree. I grow weary trying to figure out if videos are real or fake. And AI is programmed by people so seems to me their particular bias is then part of that and the AI could be used to more easily spread propaganda. I read yesterday about Mark Zuckerberg and other CEO’s developing AI assistants to do work for them even though they are making millions in salaries. I don’t trust it.

same! AI could become the strongest tool to brainwash people and spread false values. I just hope it won’t happen

It seems that AI is a strange, unusual, at times dangerous and seemingly all encompassing genie that we have let out of the bottle.
