When days start getting colder, you want everything to feel extra comfortable and mellow to compensate the weather outside. Hot drinks, thick clothes and blankets warm up your body, while cozy movies warm up your soul.
Since I love making different lists of films, trying to categorize them in my own way, I decided to gather up cozy romantic films with an incredible autumn atmosphere. They are quite old and popular, so I don’t think I’ll be surprising anyone with this list. Consider this post a reminder to watch and enjoy these comfy movies once again.
Runaway Bride (1999)
The movie is about a girl who keeps dumping her fiancés at the altar and running away from her own weddings; and a journalist who wants to write a satirical article about her but ends up falling in love with her instead. This movie has two of my favorite things in it – autumnal atmosphere and a cozy little town, where everyone knows each other, which always adds more warmth to the films. And, of course, I got to mention the amazing chemistry between Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, who portray the main characters.
Autumn in New York (2000)
Well, the title already speaks for itself: it’s a romantic story set in New York in autumn, so there will be no lack of beautiful seasonal sceneries throughout the film. An egoistic womanizer (Richard Gere again) falls in love with a young woman (Winona Ryder). But not everything is perfect in their relationship, as it turns out that Winona’s character is sick. It’s a bittersweet story that makes you believe that anyone can change and become a better person.
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
This movie combines all the popular relationship tropes: Harry and Sally, who didn’t know each other but had to share a long ride together, become enemies from strangers. Years later they realized that they have more in common that they initially thought and became good friends. Eventually their friendship turned into something more. The movie portrays different seasons, but the fall scenes are the most memorable ones, so it definitely goes in my autumn list.
Stepmom (1998)
This isn’t a romantic movie portraying a love story like other films from the list. It shows a divorced family and how the decision of breaking up affected everyone – the children, who felt betrayed and wanted everything to get back to normal; the mom, who didn’t accept his ex-husband’s new girlfriend and was afraid of being replaced; the dad, who didn’t know how to make things right and find balance between his family and new love; and the girlfriend, who wanted to fit in the family but felt like an outsider. It’s a bittersweet story that somehow managed to show both happy and fun moments with sad and lonely ones. The story takes places in autumn up until Christmas, so you’ll get lots cozy scenes to enjoy.
You’ve Got Mail (1998)
The movie is about an anonymous email correspondence between two strangers. They have no idea that the person they’re regularly sending letters to is their business rival, whom they hate with their whole heart. This is one of my favorite films: it has the perfect comfy autumn vibes, as a great part of the movie shows a cozy little bookstore where the main character works. I swear, every time I watch it I seriously think about opening my own bookstore. Plus I just love Meg Ryan’s movies, for me she is the icon of 90s romcoms. And her chemistry with Tom Hanks is incredible.
Sweet November (2001)
To be honest I was hesitant about adding this movie to the list, as it doesn’t really have the picturesque autumn scenes even though it happens in November. However it still has a lovely atmosphere, with a warm and comfy house, cute autumn outfits and rainstorms. And I love those movies that show how a person can change, realize their mistakes and become better. It’s an important message that we need to hear every now and then. The plot is quite simple: it’s about a workaholic man who has no other interest and values than his job and money. But his life changes when he meets a weird woman who seizes the day. She persuades him to spend a whole month with her, so she show the beauty of life and change him.

It’s funny when you said the movies were “quite old” I wasn’t thinking or prepared to find an 1989 movie as “quite old”. Lol Or any of the others on your list as ” quite old”. Lol.
But you do have some good selections.
Yes, these are not current movies. But I was thinking more of something from maybe the 50s and older? Lol🤷

I thought about the same thing when I was writing it haha. In fact, the initial title of this post was “old movies with autumn atmosphere”, but I changed it cause I also don’t really consider them that old, even though they were released more than 20 years ago 😅
