The Benefits of Taking a Break

Recently I haven’t been very active in my blog site, so I can probably say, that I have been taking a break from it. I don’t want to justify myself now, because I don’t have any real reasons or explanations: I simply didn’t feel like writing. I didn’t have topics that I wanted to cover. Though, this was a lie, as I had too many topics that I kept pondering about, but I didn’t feel like I want to dedicate a whole post to any of them. Sometimes I, like all other people, who think they should be doing something they’re not currently doing, felt guilty for “abandoning” my website. Then I started thinking about breaks in a more philosophical way and realized, that they are very essential in all spheres of life.

This new materialistic world urges us to keep running in a hamster wheel, so we can reach our numerous goals that never seem to end. So, whenever someone decides to take a break, they feel guilty for “spending their precious time in vain”. People don’t want to spend even one day at home, doing absolutely nothing, cause they could have done so much instead. That’s why there are thousands, or even millions of constantly tired, depressed, burned out people, who live their lives like zombies or robots.

We are living human beings, who grow up, change, find new interests and hobbies. And you can’t expect them to do the same thing over and over again for years and decades. Even the things that used to inspire them or rock their boat can lose their significance and fun, and that’s absolutely normal. It doesn’t mean though that it’s a permanent end. More like a hiatus, And if you, for instance, loved drawing, and then suddenly lost your interest in it, it doesn’t mean that you won’t ever go back to drawing again. You just need some time off. Even for your hobbies.

Same goes for work. I understand that you can’t just take breaks every single time you feel a little tired. But you should have the right work-life balance that will allow you to take a rest, recharge and go back to your duties with fresh powers. If you feel like you’re running out of energy, don’t be afraid to take some time for yourself and spend it the way you want, not the way the society wants you to. What I mean by that is that people often take a vacation only for traveling or special occasions, because they can’t go back to work and tell everyone that they spent their time doing nothing. Their colleagues will think it’s weird, and for many people their public image and the opinion of others’ are much more important than their own well-being.

Taking breaks is beneficial, it’s essential, because when you keep doing the same things for a long period of time, you lose your whole passion and inner motivation. When you take a break, your body and mind get some rest and then start figuring out what they want to do next. Suddenly you realize, that you want to change something in your life, you want to do something more, you get new cool ideas, something you haven’t thought of before. It gives you a new perspective and a feeling of a fresh start. Taking a break is like a phoenix. You burn down and then reborn from ashes, becoming even better than before.

I feel like this post is a little all over the place and doesn’t have a straight narrative. But that’s how it turned out. I just thought I could use my own example to show that it’s okay to take breaks and disappear for a while.

  1. Thanks for this reminder. We should all learn to take breaks and not see them as withdrawing from the world. Rather, breaks and pauses can be more beneficial to our overall well-being and ultimately lead to more focused and meaningful interactions in future. Absences from social media will just mean that others will be glad when they see you back. After all, you can’t miss something unless it’s gone for a while. Your posts are always thoughtful.

    • thanks a lot! and I absolutely agree with you! we think that we’ll miss so much if we take a break, but that are just our misleading thoughts that make us feel guilty

      • Just saw your nice reply to my comment and I’m surprised that my comment appeared as “Anonymous” rather than with my name but then I laughed to myself and saw this as a sign to remind me that ultimately it doesn’t really matter who said what, as long as it got said. 🙂

  2. An old saying comes to mind… All work and no play… I think you know the rest.
The mind as well as the body needs time to reset. Over my lifetime I feel I knew the importance of “break time”. We may feel we are “doing nothing” if we are not engaging in some sort of activity. But doing nothing IS doing something. Sometimes we need and must just watch the grass grow and let the paint dry. Too many times we let life pass by and when the time comes, we regret not stopping to watch. We live, too often, by the clock of others and not on our own time. Do we really need the light that is burning the candle at both ends gives us?

  3. I was forced into a situation where I had to take a break from my writing.

I wrote about it in my last blog post which I wrote way back on May 3rd.

Sadly the hiatus isn’t turning out to be a relaxing break for me as everything else in my life seems to be going wrong at the moment in addition to incompetence from government bureaucracies which I wrote about in my last blog post.

    • I’m really sorry for everything that happened, and I really hope that things will change for the better very soon! I know it’s hard, and it’s easier said than done, but try to be as positive and optimistic as possible and see the good side, or at least the lesson that the negative situation is teaching 🙏🏻
