5 Easy and Affordable Ways to Update Your Home

Living in one place for years and years and seeing the same sceneries every single day can be quite depressing. Sometimes it may feel like your house has become a swamp, cause everything is old and outdated. That’s why I truly believe that it’s important to make some changes in your place, so it will give you a feeling of a fresh start.

Since I’ve been doing some renovations in my bedroom and didn’t have much time to think of blog post ideas, I decided to get inspired from my work and share some easy and affordable ways that will help you completely change your home.

Let me explain. Good-quality furniture is quite expensive, and you can’t buy a new bed or a table every couple of years, can you? In cases like this, self-adhesive wallpapers and special furniture paints come to the rescue! Years ago, my shelves and wardrobe all were in bright pink, as it was my favorite color. As I grew older, I got sick of it, so, I glued some wallpaper with light-wood effect on it. Now, on the contrary, I realized, that I want some lusher colors in my room, so I painted my wardrobe khaki green. It’s such an easy and quick way to completely transform any room. There are so many cool options in various styles, so you’ll definitely find what you like. You can also buy some decorative molding and glue it on any surface of your choice. Or paint them yourself, if you have the skills. The same goes for doors, window frames, fridge, etc.

2. Change the walls and floor… without actually changing them.

Again, same goes for your walls, floors and even the ceiling. If you have the patience and will, you can paint the walls or hang some wallpaper. Since it is a little difficult task, here’s a better and more simple idea: wall panels. All you’ll have to do, is peel them off and stick to the wall, without having to worry about the amount of glue or anything else. There are even some self-adhesive laminate and tiles that will transform your floors, kitchen or bathroom as well. BTW, if you don’t really want to change the whole room, you can pick one side of it and make an accent wall, which will also look really nice.

3. Rearrange the furniture.

If your couch, dressers, drawers, etc., are portable and aren’t glued to each other or to the wall, make sure to rearrange them every now and then. I know that it can be hard and unusual, especially in the beginning, cause you’re already used to the fact, that your bed, for instance, is situated on the left, while the TV is on the right. But after a while, you’ll definitely love the new way your house looks, just give it some time. If not, you can always change it back. But at least you’ll know that you tried it.

4. Buy new textile.

Pillows, blankets, rugs, curtains – they take a lot of space in every room. Changing them will give a fresh look to your place. I love keeping “seasonal textile”, meaning that I have, for instance, pillow cases for autumn, winter, spring-summer. And I change them a few times throughout the year. And after every redecoration, it feels like I enter a brand-new room. By the way, if you’re tired of your couch or armchairs, you can find special covers for them as well.

5. Add plants and new decorations.

The problem with decor items is that we buy a bunch of cool stuff and keep them for years and years. But after a while we lose our interest in them, and they don’t bring us joy anymore. So, don’t feel bad of getting rid of old things, even if they’re in a good condition. You can always donate them or sell to second-hand stores, and buy something new instead. My decorations are also seasonal: I have a few large boxes, where I keep all the interior pieces and choose the ones that suit the general color scheme of a particular season. This way, I don’t get tired of them too soon. And don’t forget about plants and flowers, the more – the better. They make the place look so much more beautiful and alive, if that makes sense. It’s like they add a soul to the space. Also, think about new and unusual places you can add the plants or decors to. For instance, the windowsill, the top of the fridge, the corner of the wall.

I hope my tips were beneficial for you and prompted you to do some renovations on your own. If you’ve been thinking about it for a while, consider this post as your sign from the universe, haha. One of the most important things I realized recently, that life has changed a lot. Duh. And if many years and decades ago people would renovate their place only once (or none at all) and live in it for the rest of their lives, now everyone can change their house little by little every year if they want to. With all these great possibilities and novelty, you don’t have to treat everything super seriously. If you’ve always wanted a red table, go ahead and make it, without worrying, that years later you may regret it. Once you do, there are dozens of ways of how you can change it and make something else.

p.s. the photos aren’t mine. I downloaded them from pinterest.

  2. Well, since I’m in my 83rd place in a little over 12 years, getting bored with the look isn’t an issue lately πŸ™‚ But eversince childhood I’ve often rearranged my bedroom when I can, as I like change. These are very cute ideas. What did you use to get rid of the present paint or wallpaper on your furniture. I once used this chemical to strip paint and ended up in the hospital. I have an old table of my Grandmothers and two kitchen chairs that I want to ultimately redo, once I finally have a home again, and I know I’ll want to get them down to bare wood first.

    • thanks! wow, that’s really impressive! in that case you don’t need any renovations haha. The wallpaper comes out really easily with a hairdryer. you just heat it up and start peeling it. it may leave some glue marks on the surface, but that’s also very easy to get rid of with some scouring powder πŸ˜„

      • This was my first time painting the furniture, so I don’t have experience in getting the paint off. I know there are special removers or acetones that will help you with that, but I don’t know how well they work πŸ˜„
