I’ve been wanting to talk about this topic for a long while, and now that time has arrived.
Many-many centuries ago, in prehistoric times, when there was no civilization, people used to create idols and worship them. Those times are long gone, but this weird obsessive phenomenon is still with us. The difference is that in those times people didn’t have much knowledge, so they made Gods for themselves and asked them for their blessings. Now, we have all the knowledge and wisdom of the world, but somehow we still end up worshipping not even Gods, but simple humans. Yes, I’m talking about the obsession with celebrities.
How come we decided that some people are ideal and we need to dedicate our lives to them just because they’re public people and create something cool? You know, it’s one thing to enjoy a person’s art or creation, and, for instance, wanting to watch all movies of a certain actor because we like their acting skills, or listen to all songs of a singer because we like their voice. And it’s a whole other thing becoming obsessed with them. This weird phenomenon can be excused for only two groups of people: children and teenagers, who tend to overreact and become obsessed with everything they see. It’s a natural way of discovering themselves, what they like or don’t. But when grown ups behave themselves like reckless and brainwashed kids, that’s when it becomes weird.
Let me bring an example. Taylor Swift. I personally used to like some of her older songs, but now they all sound repetitive to me, but that’s not the point. The point is that idk why she suddenly became an idol and millions of adults have become maniacal about her. They spend hundreds and thousands of dollars to buy every single thing she produces, they go to see her same documentaries or concerts over and over again, they justify her poor life choices and sometimes even toxic behavior, hate on her numerous exes, purely because they broke poor Taylor’s heart… Now she’s dating a football player, and guess what, millions of people suddenly became obsessed with football, they go to the matches of the team that guy plays in, just because he’s dating Taylor Swift. I’ve even read somewhere, that lots of people have been camping outside of a concert hall 6 months before Taylor’s going to have a concert in there, so they can the best places. Isn’t it kinda weird? In other circumstances this kind of behavior would be reported as being creepy and stalking someone.
I just brought the example with Taylor, because I just happened to know about her situation, but there are lots of similar cases. People even start fighting with their close ones or even total strangers, if they, god forbid, dare to say something not so pleasant about their hero. So, I’m trying to understand why do people idolize someone they’ve never even met, just because they do their job good. Because that’s what it is – a simple job. Imagine people becoming obsessed with a dentist, who’s doing great implants, or with a cab driver, who drives really well. Just when you start making a little hyperbolic comparisons, that’s when you can start seeing the absurdity of the situation.
I understand that people need someone, that will inspire and motivate them, guide them through the difficulties and problems of their lives and that’s totally okay. It’s even good when people find someone who becomes their “friend”, their consolation in hard times. I’m one of those people, who, whenever finds a new creative person, can binge watch their content to get inspired or just lift the spirits. But there’s a line that keeps us from becoming fanatical, and lots of people have far crossed it.
There’s a quote that says “don’t make yourself idols, if you don’t want to get disappointed in them“. And it absolutely true. That’s why suddenly people start hating on a celebrity and demand to cancel them, whenever they do something wrong or not according to their expectations. Because they made that person an idol, a God, and God can’t do wrong.

We, as a “reasonable” species, admire more and more everything shiny, believing that it is gold, and are increasingly sliding into the abyss of stupidity.😔 What can I say, it’s sad, but this is the reality🙃 Good post👍❤

When I first saw the title of your blog post About Idolizing Celebrities, the first celebrity that came to mind was Taylor Swift.
And then I see you mentioned her.
I recently saw a Taylor Swift video clip on YouTube a few days ago in which Taylor Swift dressed up as the Devil.
All that glitters isn’t gold.
And then all that isn’t God, isn’t God.

haha that’s a funny coincidence! I mentioned only her, but in reality there are tonnes of similar cases with other celebrities as well

There are.
It is coincidental that you chose Taylor Swift.

More importantly, “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God.” (Exodus 20:4-5) And again, “Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their hearts, and set the stumbling block of their iniquity before their faces. Should I indeed let myself be consulted by them?” (Ezekiel 14:3)
If you want to have The God Who Is in your life, the true and living God who created the universe, including us, one has to put away the idols in our hearts.
I recall the first time I saw maniacal teens screaming so hard at the Beatles that they could not hear the music. What drives us to such insanity? I suspect it is not having the True God in our hearts, and we NEED something to worship. Like Bob Dylan sang, “You gotta serve SOMEBODY.”😉
❤️&🙏, c.a.

that’s absolutely true! I think it’s a little forgivable for teens to behave that way, but when adults become fanatic, that’s weird for me tbh

Ah, the cult of celebrity. This strange desire the human race has to place people on a pedestal. No person on earth is better, more valuable, more important than any other. Certainly some have talents to be admired. But not slavishly. Not turning admiration into adoration and worship.
They are the new religions. As bad as the old ones. And those who have intelligence know religion came about from the need to control. ALL religions are exclusive, misogynist, homophobic, dictatorial and place non existent gods above the good of humankind. We humans have fought wars over it, persecuted, tortured, and ostracized. We are doing it now, all over the world. The worship and veneration of invisible gods is no different to the adoration of celebrities. Both are deep weaknesses.

you’re right, everything should have some reasonable limits, because even the best things can turn bad when they’re extreme

It’s one to love and admire someone’s talent and success however its another when it takes over you. Everybody puts on one pants leg at a time and Everybody has ups and downs and eventually falls out of flavor and gets dissed. Don’t get caught up because it’s not all that cracked up to be what they make it out to be. Appreciate you

To idolise anything in this world is foolish. To admire somebody’s skills is entirely different and ( I’m my view at least) admissable. For instance my favourite actor is Mark Rylance. Portraying Cromwell, he was entrancing. He is mythical, mystical, unearthly. I suspect he has seen some sort of light judging by his politics. The problem is that so many are, frankly, semi sentient ‘consumers’ who gobble designer tat and hence worship those who wear gold bangles and the latest worthlessness farcical rubbish offered by cynical money makers. In many senses social media has greatly worsened this inane and useless trash worship. In other ways the internet could spread saner thoughts and habits. As with everything in life it is a double edged sword
