Did you instantly thought of Home Alone while reading the title of this post? It has long become more than just a movie, it’s a Christmas tradition – to rewatch the films, laugh, enjoy the amazing soundtracks and envy Kevin’s huge and perfect house or his New York adventures.
However, there are many other great festive comedies, which I love almost as much as Home Alone. Because they combine two things that I enjoy – Christmas atmosphere and humor. Some of them are quite popular, others aren’t.
Last year I made a list of Christmas rom-coms, and this year I decided to dedicate a list to the films that I’ve probably rewatched the most – to the holiday comedies. Hope you’ll enjoy watching them on the Christmas weekend. 🎄✨
1. Christmas with the Kranks (2004)
If you love a good disastrous holidays movie, you’ll definitely like this one. The Kranks decide not to celebrate Christmas, since their only daughter won’t be home. This decision angers their neighbors, because they’re a close community who share a bunch of mutual traditions. It’s a funny story with a great message about the importance of kindness and friendship.
2. Surviving Christmas (2004)
Drew seems to have everything – a great job, huge house and tonnes of money. However he feels lonely especially as the holidays are approaching. In order not to spend Christmas alone, he pays million dollars to the family who lives in his childhood house to pretend that they’re his real family and do lots of fun activities he used to do as a child with his own family. The moral of this film – money can’t always bring you happiness, but your close people can.
3. Family Switch (2023)
See, my list doesn’t only include old films, I watch new ones as well. I won’t say that this movie was super funny or original, because there are lots of movies with body exchanges. In this one, however, the whole family switch places, even their toddler and the dog. So, if you want to check out something new, you can watch it.
4. Deck the Halls (2006)
Two neighbors become competitive when it comes to decorating their houses and becoming the main “Christmas expert” of the neighborhood. No movie with Danny DeVito is bad, and this one isn’t an exception. It has lots of funny moments, and, of course, a moral that you shouldn’t waste your time on trying to do something perfect, because you can lose a lot while you’re running after an unachievable goal.
5. Elf (2003)
Buddy the Elf is my spirit animal, he’s the best and most comedic Christmas character I know. Buddy is human but he grows up in the North Pole, thinking that he’s an elf. When he finds out the truth, he heads to New York to find his real father. This film is just a gem for all those who’ve become highly materialistic and lost their faith in magic and miracles.
6. Genie (2023)
The fairytale comedy starring Melissa McCarthy is definitely a good choice for the evening. A man named Bernard frees a Genie, who makes all his wishes come true. She tries to help Bernard bring back his family, while he is introducing Genie to everything new, cause she spent thousands of years in the magical box.
7. Santa Claus (1994)
Santa Claus is another classic, it later had lots of sequels that I never really liked. Except for the recent mini-series which was quite good. It’s about a mean man named Scott, who suddenly replaces Santa and starts transforming into him. The movie is nostalgic, magical and funny and I never skip it if I see it on TV.
8. The Irony of Fate (1975)
Last, but not least, a movie, that shares the honorary first place of my favorite Christmas films with Home Alone. It’s an old soviet movie which has become a tradition for all the post-USSR countries to watch every December 31. Everything about this film is perfect – the storyline, the incredible music and the humor. I am not sure whether you’ll like it or not, but I just couldn’t miss it because it is an integral part of my holidays, a movie that I’ve been rewatching every single year (sometimes even twice a year, if I see it on TV more than once) since I was a child. So, if you like old foreign movies with subtitles, I’ll absolutely recommend it. Btw, last year there was a Hollywood remake of this film called About Fate, which was also quite nice, but can never replace this one, at least not for me.

great picks!!!!!❤️

I must be the only person I know who hates the Home Alone movies.
I can’t stand them.
I never figured out why they were popular.
So no, I didn’t think of them when reading the title.
Anyhow all my favourite Christmas movies were made in the 1940s and 1950s with the exception of the 2002 film Love Actually.

I’ve grown up with these films and they have become an integral part of my Christmas holidays, that’s why I can’t judge objectively whether they’re really good or not haha. I haven’t seen much from those older films, but I’d like to start watching them one day! ✨

I can’t think of any really good Christmas. Comedies. When I think of Christmas movies, I think of the 1930s version of A Christmas Carol. That is the best Christmas movie that I can think of. I Think what I like most is the sitcoms on TV when they do holiday shows.
There is a Christmas movie. I think you mentioned it. Santa Claus, but there’s one that’s with Tim Allen that he becomes Santa Claus and I know I think they’ve had some sequels to that but I did like it. That movie with Tim Allen. And if that’s the one you are talking about then that’s probably about the only one that I would like.
