Movies About Witches 🧙🏻‍♀️

I’ve loved stories about witches since early childhood. In fact, one of my favorite childhood books was “The Little Witch” by a German author Otfried Preussler. I adored the story and the illustrations of all those magical objects around. For some reason, I never thought witches were bad or evil, and if someone called me a witch (which has happened quite often), I always thought of it as a compliment. Even though I understand perfectly well, that there is a lot of black magic around, I still like to picture witchcraft in general as simply magical and fantastic, and not somehow evil or wicked, even if it sounds quite naive.

Since it’s the spooky season, I decided to take the chance and make a list of movies about witches to enjoy on a cozy autumn night.

Practical Magic (1998). This movie has the perfect vibes for autumn. It’s about two witch sisters who live in an old mansion, and try to find happiness in this wild world, just like everyone else. It also touches the subject of prejudices of people about witches, since the locals of the town were afraid of the sisters without even knowing them.

Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989). I talked about this animated film in an old post, but since it falls under this category as well, I’d like to mention it again. It’s one of those atmospheric films, when instead of following the plot, you just want to enjoy the beautiful sceneries around. But of course Kiki’s adventures are also very interesting to watch, even though the movie is a little slow-paced.

The Craft (1996). If you prefer the horror genre, this one’s for you, cause it’s quite creepy. It shows the dark side of magic and its consequences, which you have to deal with, if you choose to get drunk by your own power. It’s about how you should always use your possibilities and skills (doesn’t matter, whether they’re magical or not) to do good and be good.

Charmed (1998-2006). I’m pretty sure I wrote about this fantasy tv show as well. It’s about 3 sisters, who discover that they have magical abilities and try to balance their normal lives with fighting the evil and saving the world over and over again. It’s a really interesting perspective on how people try to avoid their destiny, but come to realize, that they can’t really change what’s supposed to happen.

Beautiful Creatures (2013). I really loved this movie, which I haven’t seen for a while and should probably rewatch sometime. It’s about a teenage girl Lena, who has to choose whether she wants to become a good witch or an evil one, once she turns 16. It’s quite an informative film about the choices that we make and their aftermath. And of course, lots of magic and mystery guaranteed. Btw, this is an adaptation of a book, which I also highly recommend.

The Good Witch (2008). To be quite honest, I saw this movie once many years ago, and don’t remember much of the plot, except that a young woman (a witch, obviously) moves into a new town and tries to settle in, facing lots of problems and difficulties. But I remember loving the story and the atmosphere a lot. The movies has a few sequels, I’ve seen a couple of them and they’re all very interesting. Maybe I should rewatch it this year myself.

The School for Good and Evil (2022). This film also touches the concept of good and evil but from a whole different perspective. It teaches, that there are and always should be good and bad people to keep the balance of life and show example of both sides of this world. Only by seeing both good and bad, you can make a choice about which side you want to be on.

Since there are many more movies about witches, and it’ll take me ages to finish this post, I’ll just leave a short list with some more films that I’ve seen and liked throughout the years.

  • Bewitched (2005)
  • The Witches of Eastwick (1987)
  • Hocus Pocus 1, 2 (1993, 2022)
  • Mary and the Witch’s Flower (2017)
  • Twitches 1, 2 (2005, 2007)

      • The Boston Witch Hunt is where The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions that took place in colonial Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft, and 20 were executed. The trials were part of a long history of witch hunts that began in Europe in the 14th Century.

  2. For a very funny and humourous movie about witches try I Married A Witch (1942) starring Veronica Lake.

A witch’s desire for revenge goes astray when she falls in love with the object of her revenge.

  3. Our whole family loves the cartoon you call Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), we called it The Witch’s Delivery Service. Like other Miyazaki cartoons, this cartoon is completely captivating, creating a very special atmosphere that envelops and does not let go.
    Thanks for reminding me.
